Canon City Tigers
Baseball Club

New indoor hitting facility unveiled

Although it's December and the snowflakes are falling, the Canon City Baseball Club is busy preparing for the upcoming season.

The big news is the acquisition of an indoor hitting facility that will be bigger and better than the one used last year at old Harrison School. The new building is located across the street from Merlino's Belvedere and, most importantly, is heated. The board of directors last month voted to pay the owners - Developmental Opportunities - a monthly rental fee. It also voted to purchase general liability insurance.

In the next two weeks (Dec. 1-15), the club will be setting up nets, placing pitching mounds and getting the facility ready for use. There will be a cost of $25 per player to use the building, which will help pay for the insurance and monthly rental fee. A non-transferable card of entry will be issued to each player.

The indoor facility paid huge dividends last year for both the Tigers high school team and for the Tiger youth program. The hope is that the club will be able to use the building for years to come.

The board also continued to move forward on erecting stadium lights at Justin Field. The school board and local community leaders have given the club its blessing and support for this project. Currently, the club is surveying neighbors near the field to make sure they have no concerns.

The next step is to bring in a lighting company and get their opinion on how the club can make this work.

More big news includes the Canon City High School's baseball team playing a non-league contest at Coors Field on March 21. The Tigers will square off against Windsor. For this to happen, though, coach Ritter and his players need to sell 1,200 Rockies tickets.

Each ticket costs $35 which gets the buyer into the Tigers game and two Rockies games. The Tiger baseball team receives half of the cost of each ticket sold. There will be more about this in the near future.

Lastly, the baseball club will be holding its third annual basketball tournament on Dec. 13-14 in Canon City. Games will be played at the high school, middle school and Harrison. This is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the club and we need all the help we can get from parents and players. Contact Mark Nethercot for your availability.

Have a great holiday.
